Black Lava Lodge is your unique vacation destination in the high desert of Southern California. Nestled on four very private acres at the foot of Black Lava Butte, a singular geological formation sacred to the Serrano people, this two-bedroom, two-bath newly built vacation rental ticks all the boxes.
The expansive open concept living/ dining/ kitchen area opens onto a large covered porch facing the butte. Take one of the Adirondack chairs and look out for hawks circling the rocks. Or perhaps you’d prefer to watch the wildlife that visits the pond every day. We have a huge flock of quail, jackrabbits, cottontails and our own coyote who loves to stop and hear his yips echo off the butte as he makes his way down the road in the early morning.
In the evening, curl up with a book by the fire (unless your preference is the legendary Pappy and Harriet’s just fifteen minutes away.) Cooks will appreciate the fully equipped kitchen complete with complimentary tea, coffee and condiments.
Black Lava Lodge is perfectly situated for hikers as we abut breathtakingly beautiful Bureau of Land Management land that many think is as lovely as nearby Joshua Tree National Park - but without the crowds. Beginner and intermediate trails are well marked. (Inquire about a guided hike to nearby Serrano petroglyphs.)
Black Lava Lodge can accommodate up to six people and two dogs. (The couch pulls out into a full size bed.) For larger parties, we offer an RV hook up and ample space for camping privately situated on the property and with its own driveway access.
We are ideally suited to host your event, party, reunion and can direct you to nearby accommodation for extra guests. We can also cater a barbeque on request. Please note that this peaceful getaway has no cell phone service or internet access. There is a landline.

Both bedrooms open onto the upper patio which is shaded by a large awning. Enjoy morning coffee and a unique view of the whole of Pipes Canyon, with Mount San Jacinto perfectly framed in the saddle of the Sawtooth Mountains. Or take in the landscape from the luxurious outdoor shower or the jacuzzi, both privately nestled among ancient junipers.
The west facing bunkhouse porch is the place to sit under the jasmine covered gazebo and watch the sun go down while your barbeque sizzles on the huge lower patio. On those warmer nights, the bunkhouse offers an additional sleeping space complete with full size futon and Dutch doors to let in the cool high desert air.
